Water pouring over the edge of a gutter during rain is easy to spot. Working out why it happens takes a little more care. Leaves, moss and other debris may be blocking the gutter, but the problem could also be farther along the downpipe or involve a damaged section.
Here are the first things to look for without climbing onto the roof.
Look at where the water escapes
If water spills over one short section, there may be a build-up of debris at that point. If it backs up near the end of the gutter, the outlet or downpipe may need checking. Water escaping from a joint can point to a separate issue with the guttering itself.
Watch from a safe place while it rains, then take a photo or short video. That gives a cleaner useful information before a visit. Do not lean from an upstairs window or climb a ladder during wet weather to inspect it.
Check for visible plants, leaves or moss
Plants growing from a gutter usually mean material has been sitting there long enough to collect moisture. Leaves and roof moss can also gather where the gutter meets an outlet. Even when most of the gutter looks clear from the ground, a small blockage can affect the flow of rainwater.
Cleaning removes accessible debris. It is also an opportunity to check whether water can move towards the downpipe where practical.
Notice what happens after the rain stops
Does water continue dripping from the same spot? Is the wall below stained or damp? Are there repeated puddles beside the property? These details help show whether the problem is limited to debris or needs a closer look at joints, alignment or drainage.
A gutter clean cannot fix every fault. If we notice a possible repair or deeper drainage issue, we’ll explain what we found so you can arrange the appropriate next step.
When should you arrange a gutter clean?
If you can see leaves, moss, weeds or overflow, it makes sense to have the gutters assessed. You can also arrange a check before debris becomes a visible problem, particularly where nearby trees or roof moss regularly fill the guttering.
